Ladies & Gentlemen

Lady: a woman who is refined, polite, and well-spoken

Gentleman: a civilized, educated, sensitive, or well-mannered man

These definitions of a lady and gentleman came off of  They are the wordly view of what a lady and gentleman should behave as.  I agree with each definition whole heartedly.  There were more definitions that involved where you were born, and what class you were born into, but I believe those are irrelevant.  Being a TRUE lady and gentleman involve these traits, no matter your status.

I know this is a big chunk of verses, but it’s good.  God spells out the way to be a Lady of God.  Let me tell you, this is MUCH more attractive than a lady of the world.  Out of these 20 vereses, only 1 mentions outward beauty.

10 A wife of noble character   who can find?     She is worth far more than rubies. 11 Her husband   has full confidence in her     and lacks nothing of value. 12 She brings him good, not harm,     all the days of her life. 13 She selects wool and flax     and works with eager hands. 14 She is like the merchant ships,     bringing her food from afar. 15 She gets up while it is still night;     she provides food for her family     and portions for her female servants. 16 She considers a field and buys it;     out of her earnings she plants a vineyard. 17 She sets about her work vigorously;     her arms are strong for her tasks. 18 She sees that her trading is profitable,     and her lamp does not go out at night. 19 In her hand she holds the distaff     and grasps the spindle with her fingers. 20 She opens her arms to the poor     and extends her hands to the needy. 21 When it snows, she has no fear for her household;     for all of them are clothed in scarlet. 22 She makes coverings for her bed;     she is clothed in fine linen and purple. 23 Her husband is respected at the city gate,     where he takes his seat among the elders   of the land. 24 She makes linen garments and sells them,     and supplies the merchants with sashes. 25 She is clothed with strength and dignity;     she can laugh at the days to come. 26 She speaks with wisdom,     and faithful instruction is on her tongue. 27 She watches over the affairs of her household     and does not eat the bread of idleness. 28 Her children arise and call her blessed;     her husband also, and he praises her: 29 “Many women do noble things,     but you surpass them all.” 30 Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting;     but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. 31 Honor her for all that her hands have done,     and let her works bring her praise   at the city gate.
Proverbs 31:10-31

Wow, way to spell it out.  There’s no excuse for us to study this and not apply it to ourselves.  It’s easier said than done, though.  I can read this chapter everyday, and still have doubts about it.  I’ll work hard at becoming a virtuous woman, but the doubts of the world are always there.  But you know what?  What you dish out, is what you get back, ladies.  If you want a Godly man, you must be a Godly woman.  God has to be the center of any relationship, so without him in your life first, any relationship with a man isn’t going to work.

There are three verses in this passage that mention the husband of this wife.  So basically, a Proverbs 31 man.

1. “11 Her husband   has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value. ”
Guys, have some confidence in us.  Not even just wives, but friends, girl friends, mothers, what ever.  Everyone likes to be valued, ESPECIALLY women.

2. “23 Her husband is respected at the city gate, where he takes his seat among the elders of the land.”
This section talks alot about how the woman should be hard working, but this verse shows that the man ain’t no slacker either!  To be respected by the elders and other men, he would have to be a hard worker and be involved in the town.  It brings to mind the phrase “Behind every good man, is a good woman.”  To be successful with his job and part in the town, it helps to have an encouraging, diligent woman.

3. “28 Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: 29 “Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.”
Dude, what a compliment.  “You SURPASS them all.”  Guys, praise your women.  Gentlemen know how to give a compliment.  Not just a shallow compliment either.  Try to be genuine about it.  Compliment her beautiful spirit, her personality, her humor.  A compliment goes a looooong way, trust me.

I know these 3 things are kind of focused towards men that are with a woman, but it doesn’t have to be.  You can be confident, respectful, and kind to ANY woman in your life.

Guys-watch the movie Courageous.  It’s really good.
